Child Sponsorship

Winsel & Windi

Twin sisters collect their end of year 'honours' awards. Since this photo was taken a few years ago the girls have both graduated from university with a nursing degree.
This would not have been possible without sponsorship.

"Education is the most powerful weapon you can use to change the world."............. Nelson Mandela.

One of the main ways we are able to make a lasting change and defeat poverty is through Child Sponsorship.

In Britain we all take free education for granted but this is not the case in the Philippines where many families are too poor to be able to pay the required tuition fees, let alone buy books or a school uniform. Because of the pressure to get into work as quickly as possible and contribute to the family income, many teenagers leave school early, without completing their education. Consequently they frequently end up in poorly paid, low skilled jobs. But it doesn't have to be this way.

Sponsorship enables children to attend school and increase their chances of getting a better paid job in the future. In addition to the actual tuition fees the sponsorship payment covers the purchase of school uniform, books, shoes and school bag. It also provides basic medical insurance (hospitalisation only) for the childs family.

Some of the children in the sponsorship program have now gone on to higher or further education at the city's colleges and universities.

Sponsorship is only for a few years of a child's education but it makes a long term difference. If a child can get a job that pays a decent wage neither they nor their descendants need ever live in poverty again.

The sponsorship scheme operates in partnership with Youth With A Mission, Cagayan De Oro City. As well as running the sponosrship program they also provide bible classes for the children and their parents so that they are able to learn about the Christian faith.

If you are interested in finding out about sponsoring a child please e-mail us and we will be pleased to send you our information pack or click this button to download as a pdf.

Currently a years child sponsorship costs £65 for education in a state school. College and University fees are higher and vary with the different courses being undertaken but we can sometimes arrange a consortium of sponsors to spread the cost.

Once the House of Joshua is up and running we hope to be able to offer full sponsorship of the children living there.
